History

The Lucayanas were the first to live on the Bahamas between the 500 & 800 AD. They arrived from other islands of the Caribbean. On his first travel to the new world, Columbus had first landed on the part of the islands, which he called San Salvador and claimed for Spain. The Lucayanas who lived on the Bahamas became sources of human labor to the Spanish, and they were transported to other islands to work. The Spanish extracted all the Lucayanas and abandoned the Bahamas for a long time until they gave claims of colonization to the Britains in exchange for east Florida.

Before the colonization by the United Kingdom, There were attempts by Spain, France, Britain and the Netherlands to colonize the Bahamas. Africans now constitute 85% of the population in the Bahamas as they were brought to the islands as laborers during the slave trade in the 18th century. After 375 years under Britain rule, Th Bahamas gained independence in 1973.

Genographic ProjectGeno 2.0 Data

Data from Geno 2.0 is derived from the The National Geographic Society’s Genographic Project — the DAR. The Hg ID is specific to this site and is used to protect the identities of those who take part in Genographic research. Birth Country, Mother’s Birth Country, and Maternal Grandmother’s Birth Country have been normalized from DAR database fields. The Maternal Origin is determined based on the three previous fields.

Note: Geno 2.0 results currently use Phylotree build 16. I am working on changing results over to build 17.
