Map

Chile is officially the Republic of Chile. It is a country in South America. It is located to the south between Argentina and Peru. It borders the South Pacific Ocean. It also shares part of its border with Bolivia.

Along the coast of Chile are low lying mountains. There is a fertile central valley. In the east are the Andes mountains. The climate of Chile is temperate. In the north is desert. There is more of a Mediterranean climate in the central region. It is cool and damp in the south.

Prehistory

Chile was settled by early peoples who traveled from Asia to the Americas during the last ice age. Over thousands of years, these people developed their own cultures and practices. This entire period is considered part of Chile’s prehistory.

At the end of it, there were two main groups of people. In the north, the great Inca empire ruled. In the south were the Mapuche. They inhabited central and southern Chile.

Chile’s prehistory ended in the 16th century with the arrival of explorers from Spain.

History

The Spanish controlled much of northern Chile from the 16th century into the 19th century. Chile declared independence from Spain in 1810. They achieved full victory in 1818.

Between 1879 and 1883, Chile fought the War of the Pacific with Peru and Bolivia. From this, Chile gained what is now the northern part of the country. In the 1880s, they also expanded to the south and gained the lands occupied by the Mapuche.

Modern Times

The population of Chile is now approximately 17 million people.

The country hosts many people of numerous ethnic groups. The majority (88.9%) of its population have a European origin. The two main indigenous ethnic groups are the Mapuche (9.1%) and the Aymara (0.7%). There are other minor ethnic groups.

The Spanish introduced Roman Catholicism. It remains the majority religion (66.7%) supported by the people of Chile. Other denominations include Protestants (11.5%) and Jehovah’s Witness.

Spanish is the official language of Chile. Over 99% of people speak it as their first language. English (10.2%), indigenous (1%), and (2.3%) as other or unspecified.

Genographic ProjectGeno 2.0 Data

Data from Geno 2.0 is derived from the The National Geographic Society’s Genographic Project — the DAR. The Hg ID is specific to this site and is used to protect the identities of those who take part in Genographic research. Birth Country, Mother's Birth Country, and Maternal Grandmother's Birth Country have been normalized from DAR database fields. The Maternal Origin is determined based on the three previous fields.

Note: Geno 2.0 results currently use Phylotree build 16. I am working on changing results over to build 17.
