Haplogroup H5a1 is a branch on the maternal tree of human kind. Its age is between 5,000 and 8,100 years (Behar et al., 2012b).

Blurb: This branch of your direct maternal line was born to a woman living in Anatolia, a crossroads of many populations. Groups containing women from this lineage moved north and west across Europe.

Today, this lineage is present in much of Europe. It is most common in Slovakia (5 percent), Austria (4 percent), and Northern Ireland (3 percent). It is 2 to 3 percent of maternal lineages in Norway and Germany. It is about 2 percent of the population in Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, and the Netherlands. However, traces of this lineage are still present in its Anatolian homeland, and it is part of some Jewish Diaspora groups.
