Q-CTS3814 and Q-CTS11969: Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again

Q-CTS3814 and Q-CTS11969 are two Y-DNA (direct paternal) lineages that are shaking up everything we thought we knew about haplogroup Q in the Americas. As I mentioned in my last post, when the National Geographic Genographic Project launched their Geno 2.0 test, the rush of new data brought many changes to the tree. The most jaw dropping of these was Q-CTS11969. You see, it brought together the well known Q-M3 Native Americas lineage with the Scandinavian Q-L804 lineage.

      • Q-L54
        • Q-L330 (Eurasian)
        • Q-CTS11969
          • Q-M3 (Native American)
          • Q-L804 (Scandinavia and Northwestern Europe)
        • Q-Z780 (Native American)
    • Q-L940

Yah. There. How did that happen? How did Q-L804 reach Scandinavia? I do not like to speculate, but it is most puzzling.

Even more puzzling is that it firmly split Q-Z780 away from Q-M3. This added to the growing number of paternal lineages in the Americas alongside Q-NWT01 and C-P39. Those two are considered latter migrants. They are recent enough never to have reached true South America. What did this tell us about Q-Z780?

Then came the BIG Y Test, and, thanks to breathtaking fundraising, many Q-M242 people tested. Thankfully, someone from Q-L804 tested on his own dime. When that man’s results came in, Alessandro Biondo wrote to me with the news about Q-CTS3814.

Q-CTS3814 joins the Q-Z780 lineage to the Q-CTS11969 lineage. It is once again plausible that the ancestors of today’s Q-Z780 and Q-M3 men traveled together.

What does that mean for Q-L804? Well, I checked in with Dr. Vilar of the Genographic Project. We agreed that it is a puzzle indeed.

Where does that leave Q-CTS 11350? Are Low & Rose alone at this point? No more tests we should take?

    • I plan to start work on a full set of pages for Y-DNA Q next week.
